TIC Celebrates 1st Global Business Incubation Day - 2008-12-12
The celebrations were kicked off with a youth entrepreneurship seminar which focused on highlighting entrepreneurship as a viable career option for young people. The seminar “walked” participants through the rudiments of planning and starting a business and the essentials of its daily operations, such as proper record keeping, cash management, marketing etc.
This was followed by a ‘Business Clinic’ which allowed the general public an opportunity to receive business advice and mentorship on challenges they are experiencing in the development/operation of their business or the establishment of their business idea. The session provided information on how the clinic will benefit the small business sector and participants were given the opportunity to meet with business mentors (UTech lecturers and professionals from the wider business community).
Immediately following this was a panel discussion entitled ‘MSME’s Overcoming the Global Financial Crisis Through Business Incubation’. The main presenter was the Hon. Audley Shaw, Minister of Finance and the Public Service; the panelists were Dr. Andre Gordon - Technological Solutions Ltd, Mrs. Yvonne Lewars - Development Bank of Jamaica, Prof. Rosalea Hamilton – UTech, Mr. Dennis Chung – Ministry of Finance and the Public Service. The moderator for the session was Dr. Henley Morgan of the Caribbean Applied Technology Centre.
During his presentation Minister Shaw informed participants of the government’s success in raising funds from international lending instiutions. He also reassured participants that the administration has been very strategic in its approach to the crisis in an effort to stave off the worst impact of the fallout. Minister Shaw pointed out that long before this crisis Jamaica had serious structural problems limiting the growth of the sector, some of the problems are crime & violence, low labour productivity, over-dependence on imports etc. The Minister emphasized that for Jamaica to return to a path of economic growth, the country would have to rebuild its productive and creative capacity, of which the incubation programme administered by the TIC would be a major contributor to the process.
The day’s activities were closed with the TIC's annual Client Awards Ceremony. The keynote speaker The Hon. Michael Stern (Minister of State, Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce) commended the TIC's efforts in providing support services to entrepreneurs in the MSME sector, noting that the facility has an important part to play in getting persons to become passionate about building their own businesses. Stating, "we must continue to nurture and build entrepreneurship spirit in this country," Mr. Stern said, "entrepreneurship cannot be treated as a secondary activity. It must, in fact, become our economic culture. Entrepreneurial activity must be alive in businesses big and small, Government and our education system."
Awards were presented to clients in the categories of: · The Virtual Client - TIC Trailblazer Award - 876 Media (producers of the popular ‘Eat Out’ magazine) · High growth Potential Award - Brand Warriors · Most Participative Client Company - InfoGroup · Innovation in Construction Project Management - Neustone Limited · Innovation in Health and Education Management - Interactive Software & Learning Systems
